Throughout my life I’ve been told stories about people and places from the past. Sometimes relics, photographs, and chores assist in their recounting. This form of oral history set a foundation for my perceptions and a frame for how I might choose to live my own life. The stories can change. Memories are forgotten or adapted and inevitably yield new insights for those open to them.

Art attempts to document in order to recall and inspire. It lays a foundation for our imaginations through which we dream. Like recalling our own memories, an artist’s efforts never quite match up with what we perceive or aspire to. This gulf frustrates but also provides an opportunity for creativity. It is up to the artist to choose.
